How to Brine and Season Your Thanksgiving Turkey

  1. Check your turkey's weight and use the Turkey Brine Calculator and brine package instructions to plan the mixture and time.
  2. Mix 1 cup Holiday Turkey Brine powder per 1 gallon of ice-cold water or apple juice. Place the turkey and brine in one of the included bags, supported by a leakproof container.
  3. Keep the turkey refrigerated at 40°F or below throughout brining. Brine for 1 hour per pound, never longer than 24 hours.
  4. Remove the turkey, discard used brine, and pat the skin dry. Apply the included BBQ Rub to taste.
  5. Smoke or roast until a food thermometer shows at least 165°F in the thickest part of the breast and innermost thigh and wing.

Important: If your turkey is already enhanced, pre-brined, or self-basting, check its label before adding more brine to avoid excessive saltiness.

What comes in the Butcher BBQ Holiday Turkey Brine Kit?

The kit includes one Holiday Turkey Brine & Injection, one Butcher BBQ all-purpose BBQ Rub, one 2-pack of Turkey Brine Bags, and a recipe card with a QR code for the holiday turkey recipe.

Can I use this turkey brine kit for oven-roasted turkey?

Yes. The kit works for oven-roasted or smoked turkey. Brine the bird following the package directions, pat the skin dry, apply the included BBQ Rub, and cook with a food thermometer.

How long should I brine my turkey?

Use the turkey's weight and the directions on the Holiday Turkey Brine package. As a planning guide, a 10–12 lb turkey generally needs about 10–12 hours and a 12–16 lb turkey about 12–16 hours. For 16–20 lb, brine 16–20 hours; for 20–24 lb, brine 20–24 hours. Never exceed 24 hours. Keep the turkey refrigerated at 40°F or below throughout brining.

How much brine and liquid do I need for my turkey?

Use the interactive turkey brine calculator at butcherbbq.com/pages/turkey-brine. Move the slider to your turkey's weight to see guidance for brine amount, liquid quantity, brining time, and estimated servings. Mix 1 cup powder per gallon of ice-cold water or apple juice.

When should I apply the BBQ Rub?

After brining, remove the turkey from the brine, discard the used liquid, and pat the skin dry. Apply the included Butcher BBQ Rub before smoking or roasting. Season to taste, since the brine already adds seasoning.

How many brine bags come in the kit?

The kit includes one package containing two Turkey Brine Bags. Keep the bagged turkey in a leakproof container in the refrigerator while brining.

Does the Holiday Turkey Brine Kit include a recipe?

Yes. The kit includes a recipe card with a QR code that links to David Bouska's holiday turkey recipe. You can also visit butcherbbq.com/pages/turkey-brine for brining guidance and the turkey calculator.

When should I order the kit for Thanksgiving?

We recommend ordering by November 15 to allow extra time for shipping before Thanksgiving. This is a planning recommendation, not a guaranteed delivery date. Check available shipping estimates at checkout.

Do I need a meat injector to use this kit?

No. You can use the included Holiday Turkey Brine as a traditional wet brine with the included bags, then season with the BBQ Rub. A meat injector is optional and is not listed among the kit contents.
